I fully appreciate that DIY kitchens or similar is not everyone's idea of a dream kitchen, but as part of a full house renovation, budget was key for us. along with Karen's ideas and suggestions was invaluable. I had an idea of the layout I wanted, but having this drawn up professionally with the correct (safe) space being left around the island etc. A BIG thank you to OnePlan who drew up the plans for me, this was so helpful to see everything in the space to scale. We purchased our kitchen without visiting the factory, having only seen the sample doors that they send out. The service at DIY was also great, they can answer any question related to the tiniest detail of a specific unit within minutes over the phone. I tried local independents too as many people seem to get a better deal that way, sadly that was not my experience at all, not sure if that is related to prices near London where we are located, but quotes came back pretty high. There are 8 things on this plan that in my opinion could be improved and a few things where I wonder why they did that- I’m sure OnePlan will have helped you see some of them already.Īnother vote for DIY kitchens from me, I could not beat the price we received on our kitchen anywhere else. Either way they will come up with an improvement in the design that sounds like it was knocked up during your lunch hour.

I say get a professional designer to plan for you- you can pay someone who sells only design or find someone who knows what they are doing at an independent showroom. A recent project I noticed had 18 things that were either very personal choices or just plain weird, the owner doesn’t see them but if they ever come to sell the next owner may well and they may not be able to recoup their investment. The kitchens available from everywhere other than the big sheds will have significantly more cabinet choice too making it a very tricky job.Įvery few weeks someone on Houzz proudly shows off their kitchen transformation and although an improvement on whatever taken out I can often count things they have chosen that even to my untrained eye look out of place. By the time you have paid for fitting this will have cost you £30,000+ so it is important to get it right. Please don’t design the kitchen yourself as suggested by an earlier poster. Lastly I felt the the designs with lots of vertical lines made the room seem smaller and I preferred the designs with uninterrupted horizontal lines. I noticed the glass cabinets on one design- I would be careful about their placement because of getting steamed up. If you want variety of materials in the kitchen you might choose two different cabinet finishes- perhaps one could be textured. You have also shown the breakfast bar in a different material- if you want to use the island for food prep it might be easier to use and to keep clean if there are no differences in height and it is all the same material.

All of your designs show the breakfast bar sitting in an Lshape at the end of the bar- Personally I think that you should have the stools on the long side of the island so that they can see the TV, so you don’t have to have a cheap looking metal pedestal and so the stools don’t obstruct the sofa in the TV area. You could have a larder sized fridge and a freezer elsewhere. Consider if the 70/30 fridge planned is big enough. I agree about putting the extractor in a cupboard- it doesn’t have to be a 600 cupboard though- I think it looks more luxurious if it is 20cm bigger than the hob. I notice all of the designs show a draining board- personally I would choose an undermounted sink and no drainer to maximise work surface. In fact you should put your ovens at a really comfortable height for you. I don’t like seeing a microwave high up as I think it is dangerous. Other names may be trademarks of their respective owners.Exciting times- I think side by side ovens have more presence and the island is a great place for the microwave.
